Context: This conference provided a forum to evaluate existing regimes for managing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and also explored alternate approaches and mechanisms for managing such global challenges in the face of growing global interdependence. Topics discussed included the nuclear, biological and chemical nonproliferation regimes; and the possibility of new initiatives, including the Australia Group, the Proliferation Security Initiative, Co-operative Threat Reduction and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540.
